Nativo di Baku (città natale di Garry Kasparov) Gashimov è uno dei più forti giocatori (terzo dietro gli over-2700 Mamedyarov e Radjabov) del suo paese, l’Azerbaijan, che con i suoi appena 8 milioni di abitanti vanta un potenziale di ben 16 Grandi Maestri. Inizia a giocare a 6 anni in una classica famiglia “pane e scacchi”: Candidato Maestro il padre e Maestro Fide il fratello maggiore. Gashimov diventa Grande Maestro nel 2002 ed ha vinto numerosi tornei internazionali. Tra i più importanti ricordiamo: Kasparov Cup (1999), Alushta (2002), l’Acropolis Open (2005), Abu Dhabi (2006). Al suo primo torneo in Italia vince la medaglia d’argento tra le prime scacchiere nella Coppa Europa per Club di Saint Vincent 2005. Torna in Italia l’anno successivo per disputare le Olimpiadi a Torino fornendo una buona prestazione individuale in seconda scacchiera (7/10). Quest’anno ha chiuso in testa nel fortissimo torneo di Cappelle la Grande (terzo per spareggio tecnico), è terzo anche nel Memorial Capablanca a L’Avana, nell’Arctic Chess Challenge di Tromso e nel torneo Casinò di Barcellona. Disputerà a Reggio il suo primo torneo individuale in Italia, sarà terzo anche qui?
Born in Baku (Garry Kasparov’s home town), Gashimov is one of the strongest players (third after the over-2700 Mamedyarov and Radjabov) of his country, Azerbaijan, which, with a mere 8 million people, features 16 Great Masters. He learned chess at the age of 6 in a typical “bread and chess” family: the father was a Candidate Master and his elder brother a Fide Master. Gashimov, Grand Master since 2002, has won many international tournaments. Among the most important: Kasparov Cup (1999), Alushta (2002), Acropolis Open (2005), Abu Dhabi (2006). In his first tournament in Italy Gashimov conquered the silver medal among first board players in the European Club Cup in Saint Vincent (2005). The following year Vugar came back in Italy to play in the 37th Chess Olympiad, with a good individual performance in second board (7/10). This year he tied first (third place by tie-break) in the strong tournament of Cappelle la Grande, and ended up in third place also the Capablanca Memorial in Havana, the Arctic Chess Challenge in Tromso and the Casinò Tournament in Barcelona. Reggio Emilia will be his first individual tournament in Italy: will it be a third place again?
